NRP Certification Training

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ is an educational training course that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. Estimated cost will be $200 per participant (does not include online portion).

NRP Training Course Process is a three-part course that is open to all new, expired, or current NRP card holders. You must complete steps 1 and 2 before registering for the skills evaluations session.

Step 1: Prestudy

The first part of the course is self-study of the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (7th edition). This textbook is available for purchase from SMRT Indiana here. Many students who work in labor and delivery, NICU or in neonatology will find that they are already very familiar with the NRP Guidelines and do not need to spend as much time in self-study. However, if this material is new or unfamiliar, the newest Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation is the most valuable resource to prepare for the online exam and the classroom portion of the course.

Step 2: Online COurse & Exam

The second part of the NRP course is the NRP Online Course & Exam. You will take this portion independently. Register and pay ($35) for this portion by clicking the below link (coming soon). Prior to attending Part 3 of the course a student MUST successfully complete both portions of the exam and the e-Sim Cases.

Please plan on a minimum of 6-10 hours for this process. You must complete Skills Evaluation within 90 days of completing your NRP Online Exam or else the exam will need to be retaken.

Step 3: SKILLS EVALUATION

The third and final part of the course is the mandatory classroom portion including demonstration, hands-on practice, skills evaluation, simulation and debriefing. You will be expected to demonstrate basic neonatal resuscitation skills and participate in a team resuscitation and debriefing. Successful completion of the online exam and the skills demonstration will result in an American Academy of Pediatrics/AHA NRP certification card valid for two years.

Frequently Asked Questions

I found a website saying I can complete my certificate 100% online. Is it legit?
No. There is no major nationally recognized training program in the U.S. that endorses NRP without practice and evaluation of hands-on-skills.

Are there different courses for initial or renewal certification?
No. Students needing initial certification or renewal take the same course.

How will I get my proof of certification?
After completing the skills evaluation, the instructor will mark as complete in your HealthStream account within 48 hours. When completed you will login into your HealthStream account and print proof of completion from there.

How long do I have to complete the skills evaluation after taking the online portion?
You must complete Skills Evaluation within 90 days of completing your NRP Online Exam or else the exam will need to be retaken.

* The Neonatal Resuscitation Textbook 7th Edition Pg. xii states that Completion Does Not Imply Competence. “The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is an educational program that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.”
