"Stop the Bleed"
Active Shooter Preparedness & Severe Bleeding Control Techniques for Schools, Churches & Businesses. In the wake of an active shooter, intentional mass casualty or traumatic event, uncontrolled bleeding is one of the most frequent causes of death.
Active shooter situations last on average 10-15 minutes. No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person can bleed to death in as little as 3-5 minutes, far before professional help arrives. This course gives you the knowledge to act in an active shooter situation and resources to provide life saving care when seconds count. This course will cover:
- Learn how to respond to an Active Shooter Situation using the "Run, Hide, Fight" concept
- How to quickly identify bleeding and apply rapid treatment
- Proper use of safe and effective hemostatic dressings
- Proper use of effective tourniquets
- Each participant given a SWAT-Tourniquet upon course completion
Uncontrolled bleeding injuries can result from natural and manmade disasters and from everyday accidents. If this bleeding is severe, it can kill within minutes, potentially before trained responders can arrive. Providing bystanders with basic tools and information on the simple steps they can take in an emergency situation to stop life threatening bleeding can save lives. Research has shown that bystanders, with little or no medical training, can become heroic lifesavers. Similar to the use of CPR or automatic defibrillators, improving public awareness about how to stop severe bleeding and expanding personal and public access to bleeding control resources can be the difference between life and death for an injured person.
SMRT Indiana's "Stop the Bleed" Training aims to empower individuals and organizations with the knowledge and resources to intervene in these life threatening emergencies. The course will cover how to respond to an active shooter situation using the Run, Hide, Fight concept, quickly identifying and treating life-threatening bleeding with basic and advanced bleeding techniques. Each participant will also be given a SWAT-Tourniquet after completion of the course. The SWAT-T or "Stretch, Wrap, And Tuck" is a multi-function trauma care device for adult, pediatrics and even canine. It can be used as a tourniquet, pressure wrap or elastic wrap.
